New and recent works by Philipp Gufler (DE, 1989), Karol Radziszewski (PL, 1980) and Jaanus Samma (EE, 1982), who share an artistic interest in overlooked queer histories. With their research-based practices, the artists look at key moments and figures that have disrupted hetero-normative structures in the past centuries. Each of them has a specific focus on their respective region of origin and residence. Radziszewski’s research mainly relates to Poland and the larger Eastern European region, while Philipp Gufler looks at his country-of-origin Germany and the Netherlands, where he is currently based. Samma comes from Estonia and predominantly revisits histories of people from the Baltics. The exhibition includes paintings, quilts, tapestries, prints and other works that relate to the narratives of Eric Stenbock (UK, 1860 – 95), Charlotte Charlaque (DE, 1892 – USA, 1963), Toni Ebel (DE, 1881 – GDR, 1961), Elisar von Kupffer (EE, 1872 – CH, 1942) and Stanisława Walasiewicz (PL, 1911 – USA, 1980).

Auto Italia, London
Auto Italia presents Filo, a survey exhibition by Polish artist Karol Radziszewski. The exhibition brings together a rare collection of photography, publications and ephemera tracing the history of Filo, one of the first underground queer magazines in Central and Eastern Europe, founded by the Polish activist Ryszard Kisiel. This body of archival material is presented alongside a selection of Radziszewski's paintings of historically significant queer people from the region. The exhibition attempts to reconstruct and reintroduce cultures and representations of sexual difference that emerged from the complex social and political context of Poland during and after the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc.

Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna
https://kunsthallewien.at/en/event/magazine-launch-dik-fagazine-14/
Fanny Hauser and Karol Radziszewski present DIK Fagazine #14 in the context of Vienna Art Week.
DIK Fagazine is the first arts publication from Central and Eastern Europe with a focus on homosexuality and masculinity. Founded in 2005 by artist Karol Radziszewski, the magazine combines queer archival research with contemporary art contributions.
Issue 14 will focus on the city of Vienna throughout the past 150 years, and its specific geography as a gate between East and West. While previous issues have often been monographs dedicated to particular countries like Ukraine, Romania or Belarus, this issue brings together queer histories and figures from several countries including Austria, Hungary, Albania, Poland, and Serbia.
As part of the magazine presentation, Fanny Hauser and Karol Radziszewski are in conversation with John Clark, Kurt Krickler and Andrzej Selerowicz who also have their say in the new issue of DIK Fagazine.
The journal is based in Poland, published in English and distributed worldwide.

This exhibition will present archival materials from Radziszewski’s Queer Archives Institute (QAI) that focusses on Central and Eastern European queer history and culture.
Consistent with previous QAI presentations, this exhibition will connect to its locality by featuring materials related to Nottingham’s own queer history and culture. This site specificity is reflected in the title of the exhibition that utilises Nottingham’s International Organization for Standardization (ISO) location code ‘GB–NGM’.
Alongside archival materials from the QAI, the exhibition will feature artworks and ongoing bodies of work by Radziszewski.

In 1989, a great political change awaited Poland: with the fall of the Berlin wall and the flourishing of capitalism, the people behind the Iron Curtain would be set free. Karol Radziszewski was nine years old, living in Białystok, and, in a graph-paper notebook, he drew pages and pages of princesses in corrective eyewear, dogs with mermaid tails, and mysterious seductresses, whose exceptionally firm bosoms would be, sooner or later, bedecked in arrows shot into a heart or a flame. Karol knows that the secrets of these notebooks were off limits to everyone.
Today these drawings reemerge as self-portraits of this adult artist: full-fledged works capping off Radziszewski’s enormous queer archive. A man of many faces, Radziszewski is an artist, curator, film director, and avid collector, skillfully navigating between the visual and performative arts. But above all, he is the creator of the Queer Archives Institute, a never-ending performance and informal organization grappling with the suppressed, yet surprisingly beautiful queer memory of Central and Eastern Europe.
The artist’s special montage of archival materials—self-made, ready-made, or inspiration for artistic extrapolation—formulates new ways of understanding history, memory, or legislation. He blurs facts with fantasies, cobbling together documentation from scraps of memories. He leaves false trails to suggest alternative paths of remembering. The secret performativity of Karol Radziszewski’s archive is not merely in its tales of the past, but above all, in the queer potential of the future: its revolutionary nature, its change, and its promise of freedom.

Solo exhibition | Queer Archives Institute
Videobrasil, São Paulo, Brazil
Karol Radziszewski presents his Queer Archives Institute (QAI), a constantly expanding research project that retrieves, from private collections, graphic materials and images relating to the queer experience in Eastern European countries. In a bid to expand his collection to other countries across the geopolitical South, the artist incorporates materials into the QAI that allow a brief reconstitution of the history of the presence of gay, lesbian and transgender people in Brazil. The diversity of records and eras amassed by Radziszewski attempts to trace back the genealogy of those productions, finally retrieving them from the grip of secrecy. As an artist-in-residency at Videobrasil, Radziszewski drew the from Festival’s Collection three pieces that deal with gender and sexuality issues, establishing a rich dialogue with the QAI. The exhibition features videos by Rita Moreira (Temporada de Caça, 1988), Rafael França (O profundo silêncio das coisas mortas, 1988) and Virginia de Medeiros (Sergio e Simone, 2010).

Seminar | RETHINKING TIME: ART, SILENCES AND HISTORIES
Videobrasil's Seminars are part of the 19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil
Immersed in contexts marked by history’s dilemmas, the art sphere inevitably expresses the relationships that shape the social fabric. Its discourses, silences, or denouncements reveal the tensions between what we wish to remember or to forget. The meeting will discuss the practices of thinkers and artists who look to destabilize (or reiterate) the politics of history and memory.
Featuring: Karol Radziszewski, Ntone Edjabe, Gerardo Mosquera and interviews with the artists Dor Guez and Cristiano Leinhardt
